Launched by CBCRP last fall, the Global Challenge was designed to uncover transformative prevention research ideas – and address the staggering statistic that, despite treatment advancements, people continue to be diagnosed with breast cancer at rates that have remained essentially unchanged over the past three decades. Finalists were selected from dozens of applications that were submitted to the Global Challenge and competed for two Grand Prizes and an Audience Choice Award at the Idea Showcase and Competition on May 15 in San Francisco.
We have published a special issue in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (IJERPH) highlighting these finalists, their ideas, and CBCRP’s efforts to advance the primary prevention of breast Cancer. The special issue, Advancing Primary Prevention of Breast Cancer, includes an article about the Global Challenge, articles from six of the Global Challenge finalists, and an article about other CBCRP primary prevention efforts, including the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Primary Prevention Plan for California. IJERPH is an open-access journal, so all articles can be read online free of charge.
When we launched our third round of Program Initiatives, we sought innovative solutions to garner more cutting-edge prevention research proposals. We created the Global Challenge to crowdsource new ideas on breast cancer primary prevention research. Ideas from the Global Challenge will feed into our Program Initiatives process, whereby we convene a panel of outside advisors to identify and prioritize ideas to develop into funding opportunities. These ideas will inform more than $15 million in funding that CBCRP will devote to breast cancer prevention research over the next five years. CBCRP hopes that these ideas will catalyze other breast cancer prevention research efforts across the globe and help prevent the more than 2 million cases of breast cancer that are diagnosed each year.
